Ganwick House

Ganwick House is a large Grade II listed home that has been converted to meet the challenging needs of adults with Autism and severe Learning Disabilities.

Each resident has their own single bedroom, access to a communal lounge, dining/activity room and kitchen. Most bedrooms have en-suite facilities. The home has converted outbuildings to create an on site education and recreational centre.

Individual needs and choices

Residents liaise with their keyworker to discuss their likes, interests, goals and aspirations. These could include starting a college course, wanting to cook or just having the confidence to go to the shops.

Staff support residents towards achieving their goals. This may require social stories, education on social rules, understanding body language and facial expressions. Support also includes practical skills such as independent living, budgeting, food preparation, shopping and self care.

"Care plans were inspected in detail and were found to provide an excellent insight into each individual’s needs. … The manager and staff have worked extremely hard to produce these care plans in a pictorial format that can be easily understood by each person living within the service."

Many residents at Ganwick House have little or no verbal communication. Our Speech & Language Therapists work with the residents to identify their level of understanding; they then augment all TEACCH based communication to a level that they can understand.
This can result in pictorial care plans, daily timetables, and menus etc.

"Menus were inspected and offer a range of diverse meals that are representative of the cultural needs and wishes of the people currently living at Ganwick House. The menus are presented in a pictorial format in order for people to make an informed choice about what they would like to eat."

Lifestyle

“We encourage residents to contribute to some decision making and offer guidance in their personal life and in the running of the home.
Staff support and encourage people to maintain and develop social, emotional, communication skills."

The on site recreational centre is used daily by all residents of the home. Residents are encouraged to explore new activities and develop new skills in a safe and supportive environment. We support the residents to maintain family links and friendships within the home and in the community.

We understand the importance of arranging interesting and stimulating activities for our residents and this includes regular outings to places of interest, community amenities and local colleges which our residents make full benefit of.

"The manager and staff should be congratulated on providing a range of holidays and social outings for people, including trips to the seaside, Legoland, Safari Parks and regular shopping trips. Everyone living at Ganwick House will be going to Center Parcs in August for their annual holiday."

Education

All residents attend the on site recreational centre which is used for social, leisure, therapeutic and educational activities.

Currently residents are also attending St Joseph Pastoral Centre doing:
music and recording, music and dance, art and craft and basic living skills.
