Dr Walter Owino - Medical Director
Meet the team - 07 August 2011
Dr Owino trained at the Maudsley and the Institute of Psychiatry in the late 70’s before moving to the Royal Free where he completed specialist training in developmental psychiatry.
His interest in neurodevelopmental disorders developed during his work as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Learning Disability in the NHS from 1983 to 2006 mainly in London and Hertfordshire.
In the last 5 years he was Associate Medical Director in a newly formed Mental Health Foundation Trust where he took a lead in the development of specialist services for people with developmental disabilities.
There were clearly no appropriate services to support young people with Autism Spectrum Disorders who leave school especially people with Asperger’s Syndrome and no evidence that statutory services were in a position to do anything about the situation.
Early association with Brookdale Care provided an opportunity to do something about the situation and Dr Owino ultimately joined Brookdale in 2006.
His current interest is in the development of appropriate multi agency support network to enable young people with ASD to make the transition from school to the adult world.
