AUTISM CARE PROVIDER RESPONDS TO PARLIAMENTARY INQUIRY REPORT

Brookdale Care, the specialist provider of care services for people living with autism, has today called on the Government and Local Authorities to implement the recommendations made in this week’s report from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism (APPGA) into transitions to adulthood for young people on the autism spectrum.

Echoing many of the shortfalls identified in the National Audit Office’s Report on Supporting Adults with Autism published Friday 5th June, the APPGA report calls for more effective and timely planning for young people’s transitions, further training for professionals working with autistic people in transition and more employment opportunities for young autistic people. The report also advises the creation of databases recording the numbers of children with autism in local areas, to be shared with Adult Social Services.

Lesa Walton, Care & Development Director of Brookdale Care, said today:

“Brookdale is very pleased that the APPGA has drawn attention to transition issues and we hope that its inquiry findings and recommendations will act as a catalyst for much needed Government and Local Authority action.

“Children and young people living with autism, and their families, should not be in the dark about the help that is or should be available to them as they move into adulthood. Information should be readily available on who can help and how they can help; to date, this has not been achieved in the majority of cases and Brookdale has long campaigned to address this shortfall.

“Amongst our many initiatives, Brookdale sponsored a conference in November last year on overcoming transition challenges for young people with Asperger syndrome. The event was rooted in Brookdale’s belief that more action needs to be taken to promote smooth and effective transitions from child to adult services and ones that do not create unnecessary upheaval and distress.

“Feedback at our conference and from those who use our services and their families is unanimous – we want to see more funding to assist those in transition, more collaborative working between child and adult service providers, more training and more information being made available to increase awareness of autism and the issues surrounding it – just as the APPGA’s report recommends.

“Brookdale hopes to see the measures recommended in the APPGA’s report included in the forthcoming National Autism Strategy and we will also be incorporating them into Brookdale’s response to the Government’s consultation on the National Strategy.”
