At 23 Andrew Fairman is the youngest person to be awarded the NVQ Level 4 Leadership and Management for Care Services.
Andrew started with Brookdale Care as a Support Worker (SW) in 2002 and has worked his way through Senior SW, Team Leader and now manages his own home, Eynesbury House.

Here is what Andrew has to say about his experience in achieving the award:
“I started my NVQ in September 2008. This award is designed to support and qualify Managers to have the skills and knowledge to discharge their respective services. This has replaced what was known as the ‘Registered Managers Award, and exists as an entirely different award to the RMA, but remains a requirement from the Commission for Social Care Inspection, under the Care Standards Act of 2000. This award incorporates new Government Legislation, i.e. ‘Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards’, ‘Mental Capacity Act 2005’ and the ‘Valuing People Strategy’ which provides a clear structure for how care is to be delivered in social care services.
Studying for the award, I was required to undertake independent research within the areas of legislation that underpins practice within the social care sector, as well as the Political, Economic, Social & Technological impacts upon social care services in the UK. Understanding these issues and interpreting their effect and place in social care services, specifically to Eynesbury House, was vital in order to be able to demonstrate my knowledge and practice as a Home Manager and that I understood the full requirements of my post. Methods, theories, approaches, legislation and inspection requirements play a key role throughout the content of the award.
Having now achieved this award, I feel that I have gained a greater insight into the area that I work in, as well as the complex infrastructure of the social care sector. This award has also supported me to find alternative methods, use different approaches, rely upon legislation and inspection requirements in order to meet and exceed standards of excellence for service users and staff at Eynesbury House. I am very grateful for the opportunity that I have been given by Brookdale Care to achieve this award. I have no doubt that this award will support me throughout my career and to utilize best practices wherever possible.”
Here’s Andrew explaining why he enjoys working with Adults with Autism and Asperger syndrome:
“I love working with people with ASD as there’s a never ending challenge. The smallest things can provide the greatest insights into how to reduce someone’s anxieties. To find the tools and resources around us to encourage and enable service users to progress their independence. The disorder itself is fascinating, particularly finding methods to use to communicate with a service user or by helping a service user to manage behaviours which in the past have held them back, or got them into trouble with the local community. The thrill of achieving success is second to none and the sense of pride you can draw from this by knowing it was you who has helped the service user to progress is incredibly rewarding, unlike any other job!”
