Brookdale Care welcomes inclusion of people with Autism in Valuing People Now

Brookdale Care, the leading independent provider of care services for people living with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), warmly welcomes the inclusion of people with ASD in the Government’s 'Valuing People Now’ 3 year strategy for people with learning disabilities.

The strategy acknowledges that respondents to the consultation on Valuing People Now were concerned that service providers, commissioners and policy makers were not specifically addressing the needs of groups who are least often heard and most often excluded, with people living with ASD specifically cited as one of these groups.

Brookdale Care welcomes and endorses the acknowledgment in Valuing People Now that people with ASD “need support that responds to their individual needs, from staff with understanding and experience of working with them”, as this mirrors Brookdale’s approach to care and support for people with ASD. Given Brookdale’s substantial investment in workforce development, the company also welcomes Valuing People Now’s commitment to developing the social care workforce to deliver support locally for the most excluded groups of people, including specifically people with ASD.

Brookdale Care also fully endorses Valuing People Now’s aim to support those with complex needs into paid work and the company already actively supports residents with ASD in securing work and college placements in the community.

Lesa Walton, Care & Development Director of Brookdale Care, said today: “As Valuing People Now acknowledges, people on the autistic spectrum are one of those groups that are generally most excluded. Their inclusion in the strategy is, therefore, a welcome if overdue step. What is required now is a concerted effort by all care providers, councils and commissioners to ensure that the strategy is implemented for the benefit and empowerment of all people with learning disabilities, including the over half a million people in the UK whose lives are affected by autism”.
