Independence Day
To celebrate Independence Day on the 4th July the Activity Centre at Milton Park Hospital decided to organise a day of American themed activities for our Autism and Asperger syndrome clients and staff to enjoy.
This included fancy dress, BBQ lunch, karaoke, t-shirt making, face painting, table tennis (ok not strictly American but I am sure they are good at it and it was a nice day to be outside) and a disco in the evening.

This was also a good opportunity to promote patient

Many people with Autism and Asperger syndrome have difficulties with social situations and require support with many day-to-day activities. With the right support and training many can develop the required skills to become independent.
Residents are supported through a 24 hour lifestyle timetable. Staff work with the resident to identify their current skills and abilities and then work with the individual to develop independent living skills at a rate that they can manage. This will include skills such as; self care, budgeting, cleaning, work skills, menu planning, food shopping, preparation and cooking.
We also work with the resident to improve their social awareness skills and reduce the high levels of anxiety many of our residents feel in new or unpredictable environments. This includes understanding body language, facial expressions, verbal and non communication etc. And using social stories and Makaton for the client to work through different social situations so they are aware of what is expected of them in different environments.
We support a resident’s individual choice through thorough collaboration between staff and resident and have an independent advocate who works with individuals to ensure that they have an active involvement in the care pathway and lifestyle choices. The advocate will also attend CPAs and liaise between the resident and staff if required.
