Specialist Advisor for Autism

Posted: 2008-07-10 | Author: Louise Barua

The Government is recruiting a Specialist Advisor for Autism

It seems that the government are listening to the National Autistic Society’s I Exist campaign. First they stated that they were going to conduct an audit to identify the number of Adults with Autism (link to Adults with Autism to be Audited) now they are actively recruiting a Specialist Advisor for Autism.

The Government have recognised that ‘People with Autistic Spectrum Disorders have specific needs that are different to those with Learning Disabilities and mental illness; they require policy responses that address those specific needs.’

The primary role of the Specialist Advisor will be to ‘provide expert professional advise in relation to people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASCs) to Ministers and to the National Directors for Children, Learning Disability and Mental Health’.

The new Specialist Advisor will support the development of the evidence base for the future adult autism strategy and provide expert advice to inform policy development, with a focus on improving:

  • Access for people with ASDs to learning disability and mental health services and specialist autism services;

  • Support universal services; and

  • Support for young people in transition.

We support this new development and hope that it will provide a clear policy on improving the support and services available for people with ASD and their families.
