Answers to the Christmas Quiz:

What three impairments make up the Triad of Impairments which all people with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience?

  • Social Impairment
  • Social Communication
  • Social Interaction

According to the National Autistic Society (NAS) how many people have ASD? 5,300, 53,000 or 535,000

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Autism, High Functioning Autism and Asperger syndrome) is no longer seen as a rare condition and is thought to affect around 535,000 people in the UK (NAS website, 2007).

How many children with ASD have been excluded from school? 9%, 19%, 29%

In a NAS Survey of children in England, 29% of children with High Functioning Autism and Asperger syndrome have been permanently excluded or given fixed term exclusions from their school at least once.

What percentage of children waited more than three years for a clear diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder?

10%, 20%, 40%

40% of children with ASD had to wait more than three years for a clear diagnosis (NAS website, 2007). This can be due to:

  • In order to see a Professional that can diagnose ASD you need a referral from your GP. Some GPs are unable/unwilling to refer due to financial constraints or lack of knowledge about autistic spectrum disorders.
  • Some people with ASD may display behaviours and traits that can also be associated with other disorders, e.g. ADHD, psychosis, schizophrenia, so it can be difficult to identify a diagnosis of ASD if the professional is not an expert in ASD.
  • Some people with ASD, especially females, can develop good coping strategies and techniques to mask their impairments which can make identification of their underlying disorder difficult.
  • Many schools, Doctors and Health Care Professionals are not trained to recognise the Triad of Impairments and Autistic traits that are required for a diagnosis of ASD and so they may mis-diagnose.

What is the name of the film starring Dustin Hoffman in which he played the part of a person with Asperger syndrome?

Rainman - People with autism who have an extraordinary talent are referred to as 'autistic savants'. Savants are rare: Current thinking holds that at most 1 or 2 in 200 individuals with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder might have a genuine savant talent. However, there is no reliable frequency estimate as yet as there is still no register of people with autism in the UK.

Which of the following is alleged to be on the Autistic Spectrum?

Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Winston Churchill.

Albert Einstein is alleged to have the personality and traits of a person with Asperger syndrome, but he died before Autistic Spectrum Disorder was recognised in 1943. For more information on Famous People speculated to have ASD you can visit:

Can Autism be cured?

There is currently no known 'cure' for autism. This does not mean, however, that nothing can be done to help a person with autism. By assessing the individual needs of the client a bespoke care and management plan can be compiled to improve their level of communication, reduce anxiety, challenging behaviour and develop steps to independent living skills. Adults and children with ASD benefit from a multi-disciplinary team approach in their care and therapy including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Speech & Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists.

How many more times are boys likely to develop Autism than girls? 1:1, 2:1, 4:1

In 1943 Kanner’s study of a group of children with ASD identified that there were four times as many males as girls affected; and in their larger study of Asperger syndrome in mainstream schools in Sweden in 1993, Ehlers and Gillberg found the same male and female ratio.

It has been suggested that females with Asperger syndrome are better able to mask their difficulties in order to fit in with their peers, and in general have a more even profile of social skills.
