On Friday 14th July the residents and staff of Brookdale Care’s residential and hospital services came together to compete in a Charity Sports Day. Approximately 100 residents participated, raising over £400 in aid of Sport Relief. The event took place at Brookdale’s Milton Park Hospital in Wyboston.
All the residents, who have some form of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), got involved in the games and activities, that included ‘Beat the Goalie’, ‘Egg & Spoon’ race, a picnic lunch and an evening karaoke and disco.

People with ASD have impairments in social interaction, communication, and imagination. These impairments can make it difficult for people to tolerate group activities and social situations, and to see other people’s points of view. Participation in a large sports day, and raising money in aid of other disadvantaged people, can therefore raise many challenges for people with ASD.
The success of the day was a real testament to the staff team at Brookdale Care who have been working with the individuals to help them understand their ASD, and give them coping strategies to help them manage in different and unpredictable environments.

Residents and staff are now looking forward to organising similar events, including Children in Need and Comic Relief!
