Individual needs and choices

Every patient has a thorough risk assessment before admission to Milton Park Hospital and before the start of any treatment, both within the hospital and the local community. Patients liaise with their keyworker to discuss their likes, interests, goals and aspirations. These could include starting a college course, learning to cook, developing the confidence to meet new people or working towards coming off section.

Staff support patients towards achieving their goals. This may involve social stories, education on social rules, understanding body language and facial expressions. Support also includes practical skills such as independent living, budgeting, food preparation, shopping and self care. We can also help access college courses and support clients to engage with the local community.

Personal and Healthcare support plans

Patients are supported by Brookdale Care’s Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) comprising Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Speech & Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists. Each patient has a person centred care plan which is devised by the patient and the MDT. The care plan includes a therapeutic strategy to support patients through their individual difficulties, anxieties and needs. This may include Social Anxieties, Social Communication difficulties, Depression, Mental illness, OCD and more.

Staff work with patients where they feel they might face difficulties, in the hospital, community or college. Using problem-solving techniques and the development of coping mechanisms, patients are better prepared to reduce their anxieties and to be confident in social situations.

Environment

Every patient has their own en-suite bedroom with toilet and shower facilities. Each unit has its own kitchen, dining room, quiet room and lounge with satellite TV.

We encourage each patient to personalise their room to make them feel more at home. Depending on risk assessments, they also have the option of bringing a TV, DVD and computer to have in their room. Patients also have input into the decoration and furnishing of the communal areas of the hospital.
