Autism ADOS and ADI-R Training
ADOS and ADI-R are recognised assessment tools for accurately diagnosing the presence of an Autistic Spectrum Condition in a child, adolescent or adult.
Brookdale Care has scheduled Dr Fiona Scott to provide ADOS and ADI-R training at our Training Academy and we are able to promote the additional places to external clinicans and therapists. The trainer offers 5 days of training to ‘reliability’ level on the ADOS and 3 days of training to 'reliability' level on the ADI-R. The reliability level allows trainees, on completion of the course and submission and passing of post-course work, to either use the ADOS or ADI-R in research or train those who work on site in their clinical or research teams to use the instrument.
The focus of the course is on understanding of the coding concepts, appreciation of the limitations and advantages of the instrument, opportunity to thoroughly discuss how to apply and interpret the instrument in different situations, and across ages and clinical groups.
The ADOS training is split into 2 sections, one of 2 days and a second of 3 days at a later date. ADI-R Training takes place over 3 consecutive days. Training courses include hands-on practice with volunteer children, adolescents or adults with existing diagnoses, video codings, and role-play sessions.
ADOS - Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule
The ADOS assessment is a behavioural assessment which involves the social interaction between the assessor and the individual. It consists of a series of table top tasks that takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The assessor observes and identifies segments of the individual’s behaviour and assigns these to predetermined observational categories. Categorized observations are subsequently combined to produce quantitative scores for analysis. Research-determined cut-offs identify the potential diagnosis of autism or related autism spectrum disorders.
ADI-R = Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised
The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) is a structured interview conducted with the parents of individuals who have been referred for the evaluation of possible autism or autism spectrum disorders. The ADI-R takes between 2 and 3 hours to complete, again it is very helpful if this interview is video recorded. The interview covers the referred individual’s full developmental history.
The ADI-R interview covers 93 questions, spanning the three main behavioural areas:
- Reciprocal Social Interactions
- Restricted, Repetitive and Stereotyped Behaviours and Interests
Following highly standardised procedures, the interviewer records and codes the informant's responses. Interview questions cover eight content areas:
- The subject's background, including family, education, previous diagnoses and medications
- Overview of the subject's behaviour
- Early development and developmental milestones
- Language acquisition and loss of language or other skills
- Current functioning in regard to language and communication
- Social development and play
- Interests and behaviours
- Clinically relevant behaviours, such as aggression, self-injury and possible epileptic features.

Why are we hosting the ADOS training?
Brookdale Care is a provider of hospital, residential and supported living accommodation for adults across the autistic spectrum. To support our clinicians and therapeutic team to continue their professional development and personal learning the Training Academy has booked this course for 10 of our consultants to attend. We are therefore able to offer 6 places to external clinicans at a reduced rate.
What do I get at the end of the course?
The reliability level allows trainees to, on completion of the course and submission and passing of post-course work, to either use the ADOS in research or to train those who work on site in their clinical or research teams to use the instrument.
Following course completion all attendees get certification from University of Cambridge stating that they have attended an official training course and are qualified to use the ADOS in clinical practice.
How much does it cost?
ADOS Training and course materials cost £875 (inc VAT).
ADI-R Training and course materials cost £675 (inc VAT).
